BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore school board is replacing the city schools chief executive officer.
News outlets report that the board announced Tuesday that Sonja Santelises will replace current CEO Gregory Thornton, who will step down Friday. Thornton's tenure ends less than two years into a four-year contract. Lawmakers and community advocates have called for his ouster in recent months.
Santelises oversaw improving academic performance during her tenure as the system's chief academic officer from 2010 to 2013.
Board Chairman Marnell Cooper says the national search for Thornton's replacement began in December. The search was not announced publicly. Cooper praised Santelises' background and says she understands the challenges the system faces.
Santelises will start on July 1. Tammy Turner, the system's chief legal counsel, will act as interim CEO.
