HERRIMAN, Utah (AP) — Five people seriously injured in a wrong-way crash in Herriman were in stable condition Sunday.
Authorities were called around 9:20 p.m. Saturday about a collision on the Mountain View Corridor, a busy expressway, Unified police Lt. Lex Bell said.
According to Bell, an SUV heading north in a southbound lane collided with a minivan carrying a family including five children.
The SUV driver and passenger, both 16-year-old boys, were upgraded to stable condition.
The father and mother in the minivan, both in their 30s, were also in stable condition. The woman was initially taken to the hospital in critical condition. Bell said she suffered the worse injuries which included a broken femur and broken ribs.
The children, who range in age from late teens to about 7, were all wearing seat belts. They seemed in good condition and were released to the custody of their grandmother. She then took all five to the hospital, Bell said. One child was found to have an injury to the spleen and was hospitalized for observation. The child was expected to recover.
Impairment was not a factor, according to investigators. The teenage driver likely just made a mistake, Bell said.
The Utah Department of Public Transportation is surveying the area to make sure there is no improper or confusing signage.
