Tennessee education officials say they no longer have faith that a brand new education assessment test known as TNReady can be administered online after a series of computer glitches, including one on Monday that forced school officials across the state to halt testing on the first day of its rollout.
State Education Commissioner Candice McQueen sent an email out Monday afternoon to school directors across the state saying that she is no longer confident in vendor Measurement Inc.'s ability to administer the test online consistently without it crashing. As a result, McQueen has ordered that students take the tests using pen and paper.
Measurement Inc. officials did not return a call seeking comment.

Tennessee's brand new online school assessment test, known as TNReady, has crashed due to computer-networking glitches, forcing officials across the state to halt testing on the first day of its rollout.
It's unclear how many schools were affected.
Education Commissioner Candice McQueen sent an urgent email to school directors Monday morning saying there were major outages across Tennessee caused by a computer network used by a state vendor.
This is the first year that students have taken the assessment test online. Officials say the computer network used by vendor Measurement Inc. experienced a failure. McQueen advised schools that were experiencing problems to discontinue testing.
TNReady assesses math and English skills for grades 3-11. Supporters say it does a better job of assessing critical thinking skills than the previous test.
