SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah voters will select their preferred presidential nominees using a caucus system rather than a traditional primary election.
The Deseret News reports (http://bit.ly/1Q3IgdN ) that Republicans and Democrats will hold neighborhood caucus meetings on March 22. Republicans will also be able to vote online.
State lawmakers decided not to fund a $3 million primary after the Utah Republican Party announced plans to hold a caucus.
State GOP executive director Bryan Smith says the election is the nation's first to be conducted completely online. Republican voters will be sent an identification number for online ballot access.
Lauren Littlefield of the Utah Democratic Party says anyone, not just registered Democrats, can attend the party's caucus. She says the party couldn't afford the cost of setting up online voting.
