PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Rhode Island Department of Health is encouraging residents to take advantage of free and anonymous HIV testing on National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.
Testing will be offered by AIDS Project Rhode Island from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at APRI offices in Providence. No appointments are required and all are welcome.
Health Director Nicole Alexander-Scott says the event is an opportunity for Rhode Islanders to get tested and get connected with vital medical care.
The agency says African Americans in Rhode Island accounted for 21% of newly identified cases of HIV between 2010 and 2014 despite representing only 7% of the state's population. African American men who have sex with men are at an even greater risk.
Sunday marks the 16th anniversary of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.
