WATERVILLE, Maine (AP) — Colby College's planned construction of a downtown dormitory for students, faculty and staff is poised for final approval by the City Council.

The City Council voted unanimously last week to sell part of The Concourse to the college for the project, but another vote on Feb. 16 is needed to finalize the sale.

The Morning Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1PzapNY ) reports that there are concerns about removing 90 parking spaces, but supporters believe it would be a mistake to delay the downtown investment.

Colby already has bought five vacant downtown buildings with plans to create retail businesses, offices and a boutique hotel. The new dorm is part of Colby's plan to create an entire program around students living in the dormitory and taking part in civic engagement and community service.
