PURVIS, Miss. (AP) — On a 5-0 vote, the Lamar County School Board has approved a plan to allow Baxterville School sixth-to-eighth-graders to transfer to Purvis Middle School, if they wish.
Presently, Baxterville School is Pre-K through eighth grade with Baxterville students heading to Purvis High School in ninth grade.
The Hattiesburg American reports (http://hatne.ws/1SB29Ol) Monday night's vote comes after years of debate about how best to handle the students at Baxterville School.
At the last several school board meetings, there have been presentations of data in support of and in opposition to a proposal to send Baxterville's sixth-through-eighth-graders to Purvis Middle.
Superintendent Tess Smith became concerned about waiting to transfer Baxterville students in ninth grade when the latest district data showed 21 Baxterville students entered Purvis High, but only 12 graduated.
