FREEPORT, Ill. (AP) — Visual arts students at Highland Community College have a chance to judge their teachers' work for the next month.

Until Dec. 8, they can tour the Ferguson Fine Arts Center and find paintings, jewelry, pottery and other art created by instructors.

Some students were on hand Thursday evening for a reception marking the debut of the exhibit.

Carrie Baxter, who has an associate's degree in art from Highland, dropped by to check out work by Sam Tucibat, a graphic design and photography instructor.

His digital photography celebrates vibrant colors.

"This is kind of one of my favorite shows to catch every now and then just because I get a chance to see what these guys do," said Baxter, who works at the Freeport Art Museum. "Sam's been a favorite of mine."

Art lovers were able to listen to live string music and nibble at appetizers while critiquing the exhibit. Highland President and Chief Executive Officer Tim Hood was in the crowd.

"I love seeing the work of our faculty," Hood said. "I would like to see us use this building for more occasions and support everything that happens over here with our theater, our music, our visual art . so many wonderful artistic pursuits that happen in this building."

In addition to Tucibat, instructors Reed Bakken, Jim Planting and Bob Apolloni are displaying their work.

"This is an annual event that we really very much look forward to for the community, for ourselves and especially for our students," said Apolloni, standing in front of a mixed media self-portrait entitled Testa Dura. That's Italian for "hard-headed."
