FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) — A trial has been postponed in Virginia for a former Fairfax County police officer charged with murder in the 2013 shooting death of an unarmed Springfield man.

A judge set a new trial date Tuesday for Adam Torres, who's accused of wrongfully shooting and killing 46-year-old John Geer in a standoff triggered by a domestic dispute call. The trial, which was set for December, was moved to April 18 at the request of defense attorneys, who said a key witness wouldn't be available next month.

Torres was indicted in August, two years after the shooting. Geer's family criticized the county for stonewalling the investigation, and the long delay prompted congressional scrutiny of the police department's actions.

The county paid $3 million to settle a civil lawsuit filed by Geer's family.
