EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) — Negotiations are expected to resume in an East St. Louis teachers' strike that has idled more than 6,000 students since the start of October.
School district officials and union leaders are scheduled to meet at noon Thursday after failing to reach an agreement during a 10-hour session Tuesday. Seven other negotiating sessions also ended without a deal.
The teachers went on strike after union members rejected a tentative deal to give each teacher a one-time payment of $2,000 and modest raises, but also nearly doubling the amount of time before a teacher would qualify for a top-scale salary, to 21 years.
The district, which has been under state control since 2011 because of its poor performance, says it needs to save $10 million over the next 10 years.
