Police: Central Ohio middle-school students caught with guns

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Police in Columbus say two teenagers were caught bringing guns to a middle school in their backpacks.

A report says police acting on a tip were able to detain a 13-year-old boy and recover the handgun before he was able to enter Sherwood Middle School on Wednesday.

During the subsequent lockdown of the school on the city's east side, authorities saw a 14-year-old abandon his backpack and attempt to flee. A gun was found his in his backpack, and he was taken into custody. It wasn't clear why the boys had the guns.

The boys were released to the parents with criminal charges pending.

In an unrelated incident Wednesday, a principal and school resource officer took a gun from a student at Mifflin High School in the city.
