ATLANTA (AP) — Tama Colson says she was finishing an evening walk in her Atlanta neighborhood when she saw police cars speed by, then heard gunfire and saw neighbors fleeing into their yard.
She says one of them, 36-year-old Christopher McKinley, was shouting: "They shot me and they shot my dog!"
Authorities say the shooters were police.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday identified McKinley as a homeowner wounded by gunfire from DeKalb County police who mistakenly entered his home while responding to a report of a possible burglary.
McKinley's dog was killed in the bloody mix-up Monday night and one of the officers, Travis Jones, was shot in the hip. The GBI says Jones' fellow officers likely shot him by accident.
All three officers are on leave while the GBI investigates.
