YERINGTON, Nev. (AP) — The sentencing phase of the trial of a 27-year-old Nevada man who has been convicted of five capital murders is under way.
KRNV-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1HpOaB8 ) that on Tuesday Lyon County prosecutors began trying to convince a Yerington jury that Jeremiah Bean should get the death penalty.
Defense attorney Richard Davies says Bean's life should be spared because of his difficult childhood, low IQ, and addiction to drugs.
Bean was convicted last week on five counts of first-degree murder. He also was convicted of arson, burglary, robbery and larceny charges.
Prosecutors say Bean fatally shot two couples in two homes in rural Fernley and a newspaper deliveryman 30 miles away at an I-80 exit east of Reno near the Mustang Ranch brothel.
