BOSTON (AP) — The University of Massachusetts Board of Trustees has unanimously approved Jacqueline Moloney as the new chancellor for the Lowell campus.

Moloney, who has been UMass-Lowell's executive vice chancellor, succeeds Marty Meehan, now UMass System president.

Moloney, a UMass-Lowell graduate, is the first woman to lead the university and its predecessor institutions in their 121-year history.

Moloney said she is "very excited" about continuing the school's momentum on growth initiatives that include expanding student enrollment and a campus building program. UMass-Lowell is opening a new business school next year and adding dormitory space.

She said the university is also launching its first-ever capital campaign this fall to raise $125 million for its endowment.

Meehan, who recommended Moloney for the job, called her "an innovator in education" and "a dynamic leader."

The trustees voted Monday.

This story has been corrected to show the last name of the chancellor is Moloney, not Mahoney.
