PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) — Authorities in western Kentucky say a newborn baby girl has been found alive in a dumpster and a teenager has been charged with attempted murder.

The McCracken County sheriff's office said the baby is in stable condition at a hospital after being found by a witness who heard a loud noise, investigated and heard a baby's cry outside a Paducah business Thursday.

Sgt. Darrin Frommeyer of the sheriff's office says a 17-year-old boy has been detained and charged with attempted murder, first-degree criminal abuse and tampering with physical evidence.

Frommeyer says the teen is the boyfriend of the baby's 15-year-old mother, who was taken to a hospital with bleeding hours after the baby was found.

Capt. Matt Carter of the sheriff's office credited the witness with saving the baby's life.
