SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Salt Lake County Jail inmate accused of stabbing a jail officer with a pencil has been charged with assault.

The Deseret News reports (http://bit.ly/1KwM0ao ) that Rodrigo Caballero was charged Monday with aggravated assault by a prisoner for the July 14 offense.

Charging documents say officer Nick Weekes opened the door to Caballero's cell and felt something strike the lower part of his neck. As Weekes tried to grab his pepper spray, reports show Caballero tried to knock the spray from his hand.

Caballero is also facing charges of drug possession, possession of a forgery device, and burglary charges.
