BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Recent triple-digit temperatures paired with low oxygen levels have killed several fish in a Boise pond, forcing Idaho Fish and Game to suspend stocking rainbow trout in other ponds from Council to Mountain Home.
Fish and Game regional conservation educator Evin Oneale says the high temperatures are creating a stressful environment for fish, and many ponds are too shallow to provide cooler alcoves a respite.
The Boise Parks and Recreation Department reported dozens of bass, bluegill and crappie dead Monday afternoon. The pond supports largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish, crappie, and likely carp and goldfish.
Fish and Game has suspended its fish-stocking program in 17 ponds. They will resume stocking in the affected areas in October when temperatures drop. Rainbow trout are still stocked in ponds with suitable temperatures and rivers.
