GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — A Carbondale mom who tried to poison herself and her two daughters has been sentenced to six years in prison.
The Post Independent reports (http://bit.ly/1HCvrcq ) 33-year-old Maria Viviana Alvarado-Gomez had entered a plea of insanity for charges related to last year's incident.
Alvarado-Gomez was arrested in July 2014 after she told her therapist that she had fed her daughters rat poison. The girls, ages 8 and 11, were taken to a hospital and later released without complications.
Alvarado-Gomez said she had just wanted to protect her children from Mexico, where the girls' father wanted to take them.
Her defense claimed that mental illness was a mitigating factor in the crime.
Alvarado-Gomez will serve five years of mandatory parole when she's released.
