LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada's attorney general says the state has a three-decade backlog of thousands of untested rape kits, with almost all of them from the Las Vegas area, and he and he is promising to examine each one.

Attorney General Adam Laxalt says there are about 6,300 samples to be tested.

He calls testing an important issue for victims of rape and domestic violence.

The promise to test the kits gained value this week after Gov. Brian Sandoval signed a measure extending from four years to 20 years the statute of limitations for reporting sex assaults.

Las Vegas police forensic lab director Kimberly Murga says she wants to complete the backlog-clearing process within four years.

Murga says Las Vegas police alone have about 5,600 kits to test. Two date to 1985.
