PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon Board of Education has voted to essentially reaffirm an earlier ruling that banned Native American-themed mascots at Oregon public schools.
The Oregonian reports (http://is.gd/aM53eX ) that this week's ruling means 14 schools that have fought to keep their mascots in the face of state changes must pick new names by 2017.
Board members unanimously rejected a proposed amendment that would have allowed some schools to continue to call their athletic teams and other student organizations nicknames such as the Warriors, Braves, Indians and Chieftains.
Department of Education spokeswoman Crystal Greene says board members felt the action they took in 2012 was an important one on a civil rights issue and that this move is in the best interest of students.
Native Americans have been asking state leaders to ban tribal-themed mascots since 2006.
