FAIRHAVEN, Mass. (AP) — Clients of a suburban New Bedford veterinary clinic have donated nearly $1,000 to help fund equipment for a local police dog.

The Standard-Times reports (http://bit.ly/1FGKvVt ) the money donated to Capeway Veterinary Hospital in Fairhaven funded a protective vest for Kilo, the police dog teamed with K9 Officer Adam Laprade of the Seekonk Police Department.

Kilo will wear the vest while on duty to protect him from bullets and stabbings. The vest was presented by Vested Interest in K9s, an East Taunton nonprofit organization that has outfitted more than 1,400 law enforcement dogs in 49 states.

Kilo was the closest police dog geographically that does not have a vest.

The 8-year-old German shepherd is trained in tracking and detecting cocaine, marijuana, ecstasy, methamphetamines and heroin.

The vests cost $950.
