SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah's population growth rate is one of the highest in the nation, according to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.
The Deseret News reports that census data scheduled for release Thursday shows that the state's population grew by more than 40,000 people, or nearly 1.4 percent, from July 2013 to July 2014.
A research economist for the University of Utah's Bureau of Economics and Business Research says most of the new Utah residents are not from out-of-state or out-of-country.
Economist Pamela Perlich says the growth has been moderate by Utah standards. She says births have been declining since the Great Recession and the natural increase is slower because of an aging population.
Still, Perlich says the population growth is mostly from natural increase--a birth rate that exceeds the state's death rate.
