North Sioux City student wins national geographic state bee

ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) — An 8th grader from North Sioux City has won the South Dakota National Geographic State Bee.

Dakota Valley Middle School student Damian Herrera beat more than 70 of his fellow South Dakota students Friday.

For winning, Herrera will receive $100 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., to represent South Dakota in the national championship at National Geographic Society headquarters in May.

The first place national champion will receive a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the Society and a trip to the Galápagos Islands.

National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo WILD will air the final round of the National Geographic Bee Championship at on May 15.

Herrera competed against students on Friday who ranged in age from 10 to 14.
