LA VERKIN, Utah (AP) — Authorities say fire destroyed one house and damaged another in a southern Utah community, but a resident and a pet dog were able to escape to safety.
KSL-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1AKiIOd ) that electricity was interrupted for nearly 1,400 homes in and around La Verkin after the fire was reported a little after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Hurricane police Sgt. Brandon Buell says Hurricane Valley firefighters and La Verkin police found the home near 360 West and 600 North engulfed by flames when they arrived.
Officials say the siding melted on a neighboring home, and gusty winds blew embers into a tree that caught fire several hundred feet away.
Buell says the house was a total loss, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
