SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — State health officials have designated a Sioux Falls hospital to "receive and potentially treat" suspected Ebola patients.
South Dakota Secretary of Health Doneen Hollingsworth says her department has selected Sanford USD Medical Center. Hollingsworth says that if an individual is determined to be a potential case, the department will contact Sanford to prepare to receive the patient.
Ambulance services Rural Metro in Sioux Falls and Rapid City Fire in Rapid City have agreed to transport patients to the hospital. These ambulance services have received specialized training and equipment from the department.
Hollingsworth says the department is continuing to monitor travelers coming into South Dakota from West Africa nations affected by the outbreak.
The World Health Organization has estimated the Ebola epidemic in West Africa has caused more than 5,400 deaths.
