BINGHAM TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A fungal disease that kills red oak trees has been detected in Leelanau County.
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports Saturday (http://bit.ly/1xuI4wy) experts confirmed that oak wilt has appeared in the northwestern Lower Peninsula county for the first time.
Oak wilt has shown up across the state. It spreads by both beetles and through root systems.
Kama Ross is the district forester for conservation districts in Leelanau, Grand Traverse and Benzie counties. She says the disease in Leelanau County only has been found in the southern edge of Bingham Township.
Officials are working to stop oak wilt's spread in the county.
