BARRINGTON, R.I. (AP) — Barrington school officials have reversed themselves, granting a diploma to a high school student after admitting to mistakes in how they worked through their differences with the youngster and her parents.
The Providence Journal reports ((http://bit.ly/1wMm7J6 ) that Molly Coffey received her diploma Thursday from Barrington High School.
In a memorandum of agreement, the School Committee said it had not provided a record of timely notices advising Molly, who has a mild form of Down syndrome, and her parents that she might not earn a diploma because she failed two final exams.
The School Committee also said it mistakenly said Molly had satisfied school policy for a World History test. The memorandum says the committee failed to offer Molly an opportunity to retake that test.
Molly had been allowed to participate in graduation exercises in June.
