FORT STEWART, Ga. (AP) — The Army says 32 soldiers based in southeast Georgia are scheduled to deploy next month to help West Africa fight the Ebola outbreak.
Commanders at Fort Stewart said Wednesday that its troops expect to leave for Liberia in early November.
They belong to the 82nd Civil Affairs Battalion, which calls its soldiers "warrior diplomats" because they work with other nations to provide humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
They're among more than 3,000 members of the U.S. military tapped to help Africa battle the spread of Ebola.
Fort Stewart officials say all deploying soldiers completed training on how to wear protective gear and guard themselves against infection, though they aren't expected to have contact with anyone infected with Ebola. The soldiers are expected to be away for six to eight months.
