LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A student shot at a high school remained hospitalized Wednesday but was recovering from non-life threatening injures, according to officials.
Sgt. Phil Russell called the incident a "targeted shooting" and said it developed from an altercation between students.
The student who was shot was not the intended target, Russell said.
He said he couldn't give much information because the students involved are juveniles.
The 15-year-old was "doing fine" at University Hospital on Wednesday, Spokesman Dwight Mitchell said.
A 16-year-old has been charged with assault, wanton endangerment and carrying a concealed deadly weapon. He also is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon on school property and tampering with physical evidence.
The teen was being housed in the Jefferson County Youth Detention Center on Wednesday, a day after he was arrested following a report of shots fired at Fern Creek Traditional High School. Russell said police are not weighing in on whether the arrested teen should be tried as an adult.
The shooting prompted the evacuation of the 1,400-student school Tuesday afternoon.
Students returned to class Wednesday.
