MOAPA, Nev. (AP) — First, it was flooding. Now, it's mosquitoes.
Las Vegas-area health officials are inviting residents in a community hard hit by flooding two weeks ago to talk about the threat of mosquitoes and West Nile virus.
The Southern Nevada Health District and Clark County Emergency Management plan meetings Monday at 3 p.m. at the Moapa Valley Community Center in Overton and at 6 p.m. at the Moapa Community Center in Moapa.
Recent rain and flooding are increasing concerns about mosquitoes breeding in standing water and infecting people.
The health district reports finding mosquitoes infected with the virus in 23 zip codes around Clark County, including in the Moapa area.
The virus can cause fever, headache and body aches. People age 50 and older are at a higher risk for serious complications.
