WEST HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Officials at West Haven High School say grief counselors are being made available to students after one of their classmates drowned in Long Island Sound.
School officials said on the district's Twitter page Monday night that they are deeply saddened by the death of 16-year-old Alejandro Zitlalpopoca, and counselors will be available at the high school on Tuesday.
West Haven police say Zitlalpopoca's body was recovered Monday evening off Bradley Point Beach. The teen disappeared hours earlier while swimming with another person. Officials say his fiancee reported him missing.
Authorities say Zitlalpopoca knew how to swim, and there were no lifeguards on duty when he disappeared.
Officials are investigating what led to the drowning. An autopsy is planned.
