MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Mason City man found not guilty by reason of insanity in the stabbing death of his father is being sent to the state's Cherokee Mental Health Institute.
On Friday Judge Gregg Rosenbladt ruled that 43-year-old Thomas Barlas Jr. should be sent to the institute, which provides inpatient treatment and care. Rosenbladt had ruled Aug. 6 that Barlas' psychotic episode in his father's home rendered him incapable of comprehending right from wrong. Barlas was charged with first-degree murder in the July 2013 slaying.
A psychiatrist who evaluated Barlas on Aug. 15 says Barlas suffers from a schizoaffective disorder, a bipolar disorder, extreme psychosis, mania and paranoia. The psychiatrist says Barlas poses a danger to himself and others.
