LAS VEGAS (AP) — A vigil for the teenager who died in a police shooting in Missouri drew people to the Martin Luther King Jr. statue in North Las Vegas.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1qN4CDU ) that about 100 people attended Thursday night's gathering.
They remembered 18-year-old Michael Brown, who was unarmed when he was shot Aug. 9 by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.
The shooting touched off days of protests, a response by police criticized as too harsh, and spurred a national debate on race relations.
Thursday night, members of the vigil crowd chanted "hands up" and "don't shoot."
Charles Ticer, one of the organizers of the event, says the problem is not that black and white.
He says "we don't want to rid ourselves of the police. We just want to feel protected by the people who swore to protect us."
