RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — The Rapid City School Board is imposing its final contract offer to teachers after months of negotiations failed to produce an agreement.
Rapid City Education Association President Sue Podoll says the teachers union decided it wasn't worth continuing the fight. But she says the imposed contract will mean less take-home money for many teachers.
The contract includes a 3 percent salary increase, a 2 percent one-time bonus and a 9.4 percent increase in teachers' health insurance premiums.
Podoll says the fact that the school district has dozens of unfilled positions is directly related to poor compensation.
Superintendent Tim Mitchell says the district has to do what it can with the limited resources it has. He says the district is using $6 million in reserves to cover its next budget.
