DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) — A southeastern Michigan human services agency is organizing its first overseas health conference focusing on medical issues and innovations for Arabs.
Dearborn-based ACCESS says it's accepting abstracts of scientific studies for the 7th International Conference on Health Issues in Arab Communities scheduled for March in Muscat, Oman. ACCESS' Community Health and Research Center is working with health officials in the Gulf Arab nation.
Organizers say Arab Americans have common risk factors and disease patterns but research is scarce. That's because Arabs aren't recognized as a minority in the United States and statistics are obscured within Census figures.
The conference aims to boost collaboration to improve mental health and chronic disease conditions among Arab patients.
ACCESS was founded as the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services.
