KNAPPA, Ore. (AP) — A school district in northwest Oregon that has struggled all week with an outbreak of intestinal illness closed on Friday so its buildings can be scrubbed down.
The Daily Astorian reports (http://bit.ly/1lgJpB1) that as many as 65 students and staff members in the Knappa School District had gotten sick.
That's more than a tenth of the enrollment in the district along the Columbia River. State records show slightly fewer than 500 students this year.
Reports of vomiting and diarrhea began Monday.
By Thursday, Superintendent Jeff Leo said the high school and elementary-middle school would be shut down for the weekend. In his words: "We're going to scrub both schools thoroughly, and let it sit for two and a half days. That should put a stop to the spread of this."
