(AP) - NEW TEAM: To create new medicines and bring them to patients faster and cheaper, the federal government, drugmakers and foundations have started an unusual partnership. They'll share expertise and research data and focus on how a disease begins and progresses to find the best point to attack.
THE PLAYERS: The U.S. National Institutes of Health and its foundation, the Food and Drug Administration and a pharmaceutical trade group join 10 major drugmakers and six disease-related foundations.
THE COMITTMENT: With a combined $230 million, they'll focus on complex chronic disorders: Alzheimer's, type 2 diabetes and autoimmune disorders rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
