PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Officials with a Veterans Affairs hospital in Providence say a computer was stolen out of the basement of the hospital more than a year ago, and that patients were never notified.

Winfield Danielson III, a public affairs officer for the Providence VA Medical Center, tells WJAR-TV (http://bit.ly/24mxtEW ) that the computer stolen in November 2014 belonged to the facilities maintenance department, which doesn't usually handle patient information.

Danielson says patients weren't notified because patient's personal information is stored on the network — not on the computers' hard drives. The hard drives are also encrypted.

Danielson had no information about who was responsible for the theft or how it was done.
