LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada officials say the state's casinos earned 2.9 percent less in October than they did a year ago. The Nevada Gaming Control Board says show revenue from gambling dropped more than 5 percent on the Las Vegas Strip. State taxes collected on gambling revenue dropped 22 percent to $52.3 million.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — UNLV President Len Jessup says research shows that the school's "Rebels" nickname is not a reference to the Confederacy. Jessup says the name originated with UNLV's entrepreneurial spirit. He also said there is overwhelming support for the nickname and the "Hey Reb!" mascot.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — Firefighters are investigating five Reno-area fires over the weekend. One fire was at the Hyatt hotel near the Reno-Tahoe International Airport and another was at the Peppermill Hotel casino. Another fire in an abandoned home is believed to have been arson.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Palace Station Casino in Las Vegas was evacuated after officials found what they described as a "suspicious device" yesterday. People were allowed to return to the casino floor and other parts of the resort after about an hour. Police say the object was determined not to be a threat.
