WASHINGTON (AP) — The House Oversight panel is asking the White House for intelligence information, reports and documents on the swap of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who was held captive for five years, for five members of the Taliban. Republican Reps. Jason Chaffetz of Utah and Ron DeSantis of Florida sent a letter last night to White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough seeking the information. The Idaho soldier was charged Wednesday with desertion and misbehavior before the enemy.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl says he was tortured in the five years he was held captive by the Taliban, beaten with a copper cable as he spent months blindfolded and chained spread-eagle to a bed. The 28-year-old soldier from Idaho described his harsh treatment in Afghanistan in a letter released yesterday by his defense lawyer.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Monsanto has agreed to pay $600,000 in fines for not reporting hundreds of uncontrolled releases of dangerous chemicals at its eastern Idaho phosphate plant. Federal officials announced the agreement involving the biotechnology company's Soda Springs facilities yesterday. The company says is committed to complying with applicable laws.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The salamander that admirers say resembles sections of Idaho's topography is on its way to becoming Idaho's official state amphibian. The Idaho Senate voted 33-1 in favor of the measure yesterday and sent it to Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter for his signature. Fourteen-year-old Ilah Hickman has been lobbying the Idaho Statehouse for the past five years, attempting to convince lawmakers the Idaho giant salamander deserved to be the fourteenth state symbol.
