SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Sandy man has pleaded guilty to filing false tax claims for $1.5 million in refunds from the Internal Revenue Service.
At a hearing Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Salt Lake City, Paul Zaccardi pleaded guilty to five counts of filing false claims.
Federal prosecutors say he submitted the false tax returns to the IRS in 2008 for the years between 1996 and 2000.
Zaccardi also pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion and three counts of filing fictitious obligations.
The Justice Department says as part of a scheme to evade paying his income taxes, Zaccardi re-titled his residence so that it was not in his name and caused his business receipts to be deposited into his wife's account.
Zaccardi is scheduled to be sentenced March 11.
