ALBANY, Ga. (AP) — A federal judge in southwest Georgia has ordered a two-week delay for the trial of three people charged in a deadly outbreak of salmonella five years ago.
Jury selection had been scheduled to begin Monday in the federal trial for Peanut Corporation of America owner Stewart Parnell, his food broker brother Michael Parnell and employee Mary Wilkerson. U.S. District Court Judge W. Louis Sands in Albany on Friday postponed the trial until July 28. Defense attorneys wanted more time to review thousands of pages of evidence from prosecutors.
Several defense attorneys and a U.S. attorney's spokeswoman, Pam Lightsey, confirmed the decision.
The salmonella outbreak that killed nine people and sickened more than 700 was traced to Peanut Corporation's Georgia plant and prompted one of the largest food recalls in history.
