Greg Neft, KSL NewsradioPreliminary numbers show a big increase in gonorrhea in Utah and elsewhere, but why?
Dr. Rolffs: "From about 200 cases of gonorrhea in 2002 to almost 900 cases in 2006."
State Epidemiologist Dr. Robert Rolffs says the reason for the rise in gonorrhea is two-fold.
Dr. Rolffs: "There's a lot more new tests being done that are more accurate in finding more cases so we can treat those people and help them out, but we're also seeing more people getting this disease."
And that he says may be because more people are having unprotected sex.
Dr. Rolffs: "More new partners. More partners where they're not taking appropriate protection."
The increase affects the entire state.
