SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah's new Spanish-language newspaper launched Tuesday with a celebration. Dancers, music and food helped launch the Deseret News' "El Observador."
The newspaper will meet the needs of Utah's rapidly-growing Latino community. One of the goals, says the editor, is to give people the information they need to take part in the community.
"It's very important to have a paper in Spanish in Utah, given that the population in Utah has reached 20 percent," editor Patricia Quijano Dark says. "We feel that everyone in this state deserves to get the news and to be well-informed."
El Observador's publisher, Jim Wall, says, "Many of our subscribers speak two languages, and this will help them know what their neighbors are doing."
El Observador will be distributed Tuesdays, Thursdays and on weekends. Readers can pay $1.25 to subscribe for home delivery.
Weekend editions are free, and will be distributed at Catholic churches and Hispanic social events.
