SALT LAKE CITY -- Some creative high school students gathered at West High School Saturday to gear up for a battle of the robots.

Students picked up their equipment for a robotics competition, sponsored by the University of Utah's College of Engineering. The event challenges students to design and build their own robots.

The teams then square off in a soccer-style game.

"These robotics type of team competitions are really the, oh how do you say, it's the sports for the nerds, I guess. The super nerds, so to speak," said Mark Minor, an associate professor at the University of Utah. "It's a great event that allows kids to really learn that math and science are fun. They're engaging, they are creative places to outlet your capabilities."

The students have six weeks to build and get their machines working. The regional competition is in March at the Huntsman Center.

Six teams will move on to a national competition in Atlanta.
