SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Gov. Gary Herbert has delayed signing a water-sharing agreement between Utah and Nevada for Snake Valley.

Herbert spokeswoman Angie Willing says while the governor still hopes to sign an agreement, he first wants to address concerns raised by the Millard County Commission and Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon.

They sent letters this week to Herbert asking for a delay pending more scientific study on how much water the aquifer contains and how pumping it to Las Vegas would affect the Snake Valley and Wasatch Front environments.

Herbert had appeared ready to sign the agreement earlier in the week.

The deal would split the water from an aquifer that straddles the two states. It also would delay until 2019 a proposal by the Southern Nevada Water Authority to pump water from it.
