SALT LAKE CITY -- The holidays have officially arrived at the Gateway. Big crowds gathered to watch the Christmas tree lighting Saturday night.
The One Voice Children's Choir started the "Light up the Night" concert with a medley of Christmas Songs. Pianist Jon Schmidt then dazzled the crowd with some songs -- including a few he played upside down.
The night ended with the official lighting of the Christmas tree. This year's tree -- donated by the Cardall family -- is 35 feet tall and is adorned with 85,000 lights.
A new holiday tradition also kicked off at the Gateway Saturday night.
The Old World Christmas Market opened for shoppers. Locals set up booths selling handmade Christmas decorations, pictures, toys and of course, food.
The market is modeled after those in Europe. It will run through Nov. 29.
