CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) -- A soldier from southern Utah was severely injured in Afghanistan when land mines destroyed his vehicle, his mother said.

Travis Wood, 23, a soldier with the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division, suffered extensive injuries Jan. 14, including a fractured neck and spine, a crushed pelvis and various leg injuries, The Spectrum of St. George reported Thursday.

"It's one step forward and three steps backward," his mother, Yvonne Wood, told the newspaper from Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

"You walk in there and he's doing fine and he's looking good. ... Then a couple of hours later, he's spiking a high fever and he's in major pain," she said.

"All I really want is for everybody to pray for my Travis," Yvonne Wood said.

Travis Wood graduated from Canyon View High School and attended Southern Utah University. He and his wife, Stephanie, have a 2-year-old daughter.

To help the family, friends have set up an account at Mountain America Credit Union in Cedar City.
