SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah set a record in 2006 for the number of oil and gas wells permitted in Utah.

The Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining issued permits for nearly 2,100 wells. That's a 27 percent increase from the previous record set in 2005.

Uintah County had the most permits with nearly 1,400, while Duchesne County had almost 450 and Carbon County had just under 140 permits.

In 2005, oil production was the highest since 1998 with more than 16.5 million barrels of oil produced. The division predicts oil production reached 18 million barrels in 2006.

Meanwhile, natural gas production is also up. More than 300 billion cubic feet of gas was produced in 2005. That's the largest amount since 1994.
