SALT LAKE CITY -- Police are on the lookout for a known gang member who abandoned a stolen car with an infant inside.
About 10:30 Monday night, Metro Gang officers spotted the man driving a stolen car near 900 South and 1200 West.
The driver let a woman out of the car to talk to a friend. When he noticed detectives were following him, he took off with the woman's 6-week-old child.
"He took off at a high rate of speed, went around a corner to a dead-end street, jumped out of the car and left the baby in the car while it was still running," said Salt Lake Metro Gang Unit Sgt. Mike Schoenfeld.
Schoenfeld says the officers went back to the party the gang member was at before the chase to investigate. There they arrested five more people.
"Two had warrants and three had distributable amounts of methamphetamine," Schoenfeld said.
Mother and child have been reunited, but police are still looking for the driver, Shawn Bergeron, a.k.a. "Blinks." Police say the Bergeron was giving the woman a ride to a friend's house.
